Day 10: Back to Austria, Kranjska Gora – Faak/See

So, now we were in Kranjska Gora. How to come back to Austria? Public transport would be possible but not very easy because there’s no train to Villach. A taxi would cost around 50 Euro, not too expensive but then again we could invest those Euros in food. 😜 And our CO2 footprint wouldn’t be so nice after all. So, the only logical solution: let’s just hike back the way we came from!

Breakfast was ok in our hotel in a suburb of Kranjska Gora. Nothing special and only God knows why all the hotel guests were already up at 7 a.m. and having breakfast but it served for some energy.

So at 7.45 a.m. we headed off back to Carinthia again. The sky was still cloudy from last night’s thunder and rain but it looked like becoming a fine day.

At first we hiked upwards through the forest again. More than 1000m of altitude. After the long hike yesterday it wasn’t very easy but we were surprisingly quickly at the mountain pass at 1840m again.

Then like yesterday back via the mountain ridge again. The view was once more fantastic:

Somewhere along the way we met those pretty guys. When they saw us they bleated like madly. I’m sure we didn’t smell that bad. Well, I’m rather sure. Ok, actually we did smell rather bad! 😂

Then instead of hiking over the Schwarzkogel once more we straightly went down to the Mitzl Moitzl hut, a former hut from the Austrian Alpine Association but no longer serviced. Such a shame because the view up there was amazing:

Afterwards we headed down very steeply through the forest and now the fog from the valley began to rise. It ended like it began. 😂

Shortly before arriving at the Baumgartner Höhe again we also passed the Rotschitza waterfall:

It looked like it was a hot and dry summer here too because it was more a trickle than a true waterfall. 😕

Then we were at the Baumgartnerhof again and stopped for a lunch break. And after asking the waitress I found my sun hat again!!! Obviously it was blown from our balcony the day before yesterday when there was so much wind.

We enjoyed the lunch up here at this great place knowing that with this last descent to Faak our hiking trip would be history. 😢

And then it was time. We hiked down the last few kilometres to Faak, took the train back to Villach to get to our car.

The last evening we spent at the lake restaurant of the pretty Urbansee:

And tomorrow we’ll have to return back to ugly, stinking, full-of-people-being Vienna. 👎😷😡😭

Tomorrow I’ll post a full summary of all the interesting data!

Some figures:

  • 20km
  • 1200m up
  • 1400m down
  • Found: my sun hat!!! ❤
