Day 1 – from KFJH to Heiligenblut and further to Schachern
First stage today! We were quite nervous that the weather would be good enough because rain and thunderstorm were predicted in the afternoon…
Day 2 – from Schachern to the Rangersdorfer Hütte
There was quite some heavy rain and even a thunderstorm in the night and during the morning so we woke a few times. But the bed was comfortable and it was so quiet!
Day 3 – from the Rangersdorfer Hütte to Stall
Today we woke to birds and cows only. The air was great up here and there was nobody else around. The view from our balcony was incredible:
Day 4 – from Pension Pichlerhof to Fraganter Schutzhaus
Since we had no connection whatsoever yesterday evening I’m adding day 4 today. 😊 We slept very good in the Pension Pichlerhof and though the breakfast wasn’t very large we got our stomaches filled for another long and hard day of hiking. The path from the accomodation to Stall wasn’t very exciting but quite ok … Continue reading “Day 4 – from Pension Pichlerhof to Fraganter Schutzhaus”
Day 5 – from the Fraganter Schutzhaus to Mallnitz
Today we hiked the most boring and hardest tour so far…
Day 6 – from Mallnitz to Obervellach
When yesterday was the most boring stage then today was one of the most beautiful so far. First we wanted to do the round trip to the lake Stappitzersee which also meant we could leave our backpacks at the accomodation. How easy walking is without 10 or more kilos on your back!!!
Day 7 – from Obervellach to Pension Scheiflinger
With today we’ve now been hiking one full week! Especially the first days were hard and nearly brought us to our limits. After yesterday we were very exhausted and didn’t do much else than to lie in bed from 6 o’clock p.m. But today was the first time hiking felt easy. Of course it helped … Continue reading “Day 7 – from Obervellach to Pension Scheiflinger”
Day 8 – from Pension Scheiflinger to Hühnersberg
We slept very good this night (there was no noise anywhere!) and had a very nice breakfast together with Anna whom we had met at Danielsberg the day before and who is also hiking a part of the AAT. Today I decided to take the antibiotics because my hand was still swollen from the damn … Continue reading “Day 8 – from Pension Scheiflinger to Hühnersberg”
Day 9 – from Hühnersberg to Gmünd
In the cool height of the Hühnersberg we slept quite good and where fit and ready for breakfast at 7.30 a.m. Unfortunately, the innkeepers weren’t. So, hungry as we were we spent a little while outside in the morning sun doing our warm-up for the hike and then went packing our backpacks.
Day 10 – from Gmünd to Seeboden
The Pension Alte Mühle was really nice, we slept well and the breakfast was great for vegetarians. We were a bit sorry to leave because Gmünd is really a pretty town! We set off quite stresslessly because today’s route was easy and the weather forecast stable.
Day 11 – rest day in Seeboden
Today we had planned our rest day though after the last few more relaxing tours I didn’t feel like I needed one. Anyway, it was nice taking your time at the breakfast, doing some washing and even some reading. Usually, after hiking all day and after writing the daily blog entry I’m already too tired … Continue reading “Day 11 – rest day in Seeboden”
Day 12 – from Seeboden to Alexander Hütte
After getting up earlier than the days before we had a nice, but short breakfast before we headed off again. Thankfully, we chose the Hotel Gmeineck because this way we had a headstart of 2 km into the next stage.
Day 13 – from the Alexander Hütte to Döbriach
Well, the night in the Alexander Hütte wasn’t quite as relaxing as we hoped. After having difficulties in the evening to find the bathroom free for cleaning the teeth and no hot water after 8 p.m. anymore we nearly were asleep when we heard strange noises.
Day 14 – from Döbriach to the Erlacher Hütte
This night we slept so good that we even awoke before the alarm clock. Breakfast was good and more than enough and soon we were on our way again.
Day 15 – from Erlacher Haus to Lärchenhütte
This morning I woke shortly after 6 a.m. after having slept more than 8 hours and so well! Since we wanted to start early anyway we got up and ready. It’s gotten quite a routine packing our backpacks in the morning and thanks to our dry sack system it’s so simply and quickly done…
Day 16 – from Lärchenhütte to Bad Kleinkirchheim
Today was the first day we had really bad weather. Shitty weather, in fact. 😢 So, for the first time we had no chance at all to stick to the way planned. But let’s start earlier…
Day 17 – from Bad Kleinkirchheim to Arriach
This night we slept very good and without interruption. Breakfast was already there when we came down, and we chatted a little with Erika, our lovely landlady. When I told her I’m vegetarian she brought me her selfmade apricot jam which none of the other guests got. 😁 After filling our stomaches we packed our … Continue reading “Day 17 – from Bad Kleinkirchheim to Arriach”
Day 18 – from Arriach to Gerlitzen
We slept so great this night until the church bells rang at 6 a.m. 😉 Before breakfast we did some shopping at the small supermarket of Arriach, just across our accomodation. Bananas, chocolate and crisps – all the healthy food of a long distance hiker. 😂
Day 19 – from the Gerlitzen to Ossiach
This night again we slept like dead. It was so quiet up here, and even the Polish kids that were obviously here on summer camp with their counselors were not to be heard after 9 p.m. We awoke to a gorgeous view:
Day 20 – Rest day in Ossiach
Today was our rest day and we so wanted to jump into the beautiful Ossiacher See! And of course my parents, our trail angels, would come to bring the refill of our supplies!!!
Day 21 – from Ossiach to Velden
After breakfast we headed off again. The hotel Gasthof zur Post was really nice, spacious rooms, very friendly staff and we’ll be ever greatful for having our clothes washed. 😉 At first we had the same way like when arriving in Ossiach. It wasn’t even 8.30 a.m. and already very hot!
Day 22 – from Velden to Faak am See
The night in Velden was rather fitful because there were quite some people coming late at night into the guesthouse and not caring for other people sleeping. 😒 At least breakfast was nice and more than enough with a wide range of bread. At 8.15 a.m. we started today’s stage which was said to be … Continue reading “Day 22 – from Velden to Faak am See”
Day 23 – from Faak am See to Warmbad Villach
Today we’d be hiking to Villach but first have a detour to the Baumgartner Höhe. Actually, the direct path of the AAT would lead over the Baumgartner Höhe to Kranska Gora but we decided to do the circular route, too, which means a 6-day additional hike around the Dreiländereck.
Day 24 – from Warmbad Villach to Feistritz an der Gail
Tonight was not very restful because it was rather warm in the room but we couldn’t leave a window open since our accomodation was next to the railroads and a street. Nonetheless we got up rather early to have breakfast at 7 a.m. as today’s stage would be quite long and it was going to … Continue reading “Day 24 – from Warmbad Villach to Feistritz an der Gail”
Day 25 – from Feistritz a.d. Gail to Valbruna
Today we’ll finally be hiking over the boarder to Italy. So, this would be the last day in Austria after hiking here for 24 days! All in all, I loved the Austrian part, especially the Millstätter Alpe and the Nockberge. I’m not sure whether the Italian or Slovenian part can get close to it but … Continue reading “Day 25 – from Feistritz a.d. Gail to Valbruna”
Day 26 – from Valbruna to Monte Lussari
Today we would have a rather short tour because we splitted the regular stage from Valbruna to Tarvisio since I wanted to stay on the Monte Lussari for the night.
Day 27 – from Monte Lussari to Tarvisio
We’ve never slept better on the whole trail than on the Monte Lussari. It was so quiet at night you didn’t hear anything! Even with our window open. The air was cool and fresh and we woke even before our alarm.
Day 28 – from Tarvisio to the Rifugio Zacchi
Due to the fact of no connection whatsoever yesterday I’m doing the blog entry today:
Day 29 – from Rifugio Zacchi to Kranjska Gora
Well, the night was even worse than expected in the Rifugio. Three of the people sleeping in our dorm entered it rather late at 11.30 p.m. and didn’t even try to be quiet. But if we could have had at least those precious hours of sleep until morning it wouldn’t have been so bad.
Day 30 – from Kranjska Gora to Trenta
Tonight we slept insanely well! After the awful night in the Rifugio Zacchi we probably were tired beyond words and it was so quiet at the hotel Miklic and the beds were so comfortable!
Day 31 – from Trenta to Bovec
The night at the Air B&B of Bojana was quite ok but rather short when I was woken by some cars passing by in the early morning at around 5.30. Since we wanted to start early anyway we got up at 6.15 a.m.
Day 32 – from Bovec to Drežnica
The night at the Apartment Raft was very quiet and comfortable, even the churchbells started to ring only by 7 a.m. 😉
Day 33 – from Drežnica to Tolmin
Although we fell asleep rather early yesterday we were woken by thunderstorms and heavy rain at 5 a.m. This didn’t bear well for our planned early start to avoid the same in the evening…
Day 34 – from Tolmin to Tribil di Sopra
Today we’ll leave the Soča valley. It’s not that I very much regret it because although the Soča is nice 60km hiking along the river nearly all the time is getting really boring. 😉
Day 35 – from Tribil di Sopra to Cividale
Tribil di Sopra is really a quiet place and we did sleep well. Until the church bells rang. At 5 a.m.! Twice in fact! When at 6 a.m. another jingle concert of bells started we got up.
Day 36 – rest day in Cividale
Today was our rest day and we decided to sleep in. I didn’t set an alarm, and the church bells also didn’t ring before 8 a.m. but nonetheless I woke even before 7 – not used to long sleep anymore. 😉
Day 37 – from Cividale to Breg
After having made breakfast ourselves we packed our stuff to leave. Since today’s stage is very short we took our time but finally had to say goodbye to Cividale. Gonna miss the icecream. 😉 And Stefano’s gorgeous apartment!
Day 38 – from Breg to Šmartno
Since we fell asleep rather early it was no problem to get up at 6 a.m. And at this time you could even open the windows without mosquitos. 😉 Since Felix has fetched the breakfast the day before from the main house we could even eat in bed. 😉
Day 39 – from Šmartno to Cormòns
Since breakfast was only at 8 a.m. we could have slept longer but the church bells woke us again nicely and loudly at 6 a.m. Honestly, you really seldom need an alarm clock on the trail. 😉
Day 40 – from Cormòns to Gradisca d’Isonzo
Today it’s been now exactly 40 days since we’re on our trip. That’s more than a month. 😵 I can’t really believe that we’ve been hiking so long and not even for the split of a second I’ve missed home. Not when I couldn’t feel my feet anymore, not when I sweated so much that … Continue reading “Day 40 – from Cormòns to Gradisca d’Isonzo”
Day 41 – from Gradisca d’Isonzo to Duino
Today we’d be having the longest of all stages on the AAT – this in the hottest day we’ve had so far in this altitude. It’s one thing when you hike at 1500m or higher with 35°C somewhere down below, but then it’s totally different when you’re at sea level in the South. So we … Continue reading “Day 41 – from Gradisca d’Isonzo to Duino”
Day 42 – from Duino to Prosecco
The night in the Villa Rilke was way too hot and the air condition (or whatever they called air condition) wasn’t helping at all so we didn’t sleep well. Since breakfast was only at 8 a.m. and we woke much earlier due to the noise from the highway not very far away we had too … Continue reading “Day 42 – from Duino to Prosecco”
Day 43 – from Prosecco to Lipica
Tonight we woke to some enormous thunderstorms and heavy rain and I ran to close the window. The wind was blowing very strongly and it took some time to fall asleep again. Otherwise Luciano’s apartment would have been perfectly quiet. 😉
Day 44 – from Lipica to Bagnoli della Rosandra
Since a very mean mosquito (it was obviously very hungry! 😬) shared our room sleep was rather fitful tonight although it was so very quiet here.
Day 45 – from Bagnoli della Rosandra to Muggia
So this is it. This is finally the last day of us hiking the Alpe Adria Trail. It’s the first long distance hike we’ve done. We’ve been on hiking holidays very often but always with one fine hotel as “base camp” and then doing some daily hikes. I’ve never thought that we won’t make it, … Continue reading “Day 45 – from Bagnoli della Rosandra to Muggia”
