Day 36 – rest day in Cividale

Today was our rest day and we decided to sleep in. I didn’t set an alarm, and the church bells also didn’t ring before 8 a.m. but nonetheless I woke even before 7 – not used to long sleep anymore. 😉

We got up at 8 a.m. and after the last two days of a rather lousy breakfast we made it ourselves today:

Afterwards we hung around a bit in our cool apartment before we went outside to explore Cividale. But at first we went to the lovely little bakery Zuckerfee to have coffee. The espresso and the highly praised chocolate brioche were indeed awesome. The café is owned by a German couple thus this name. 😉

Afterwards we strolled around and admired the pretty houses with the medieval style:

Then we walked to a small park only 5 minutes from our apartment (actually, everything worth seeing is in 5 minutes distance to our accomodation 😉) and sat there in the cool shadow for a while.

Then we continued to visit the Tempietto Longobardo, a temple from the 8th century on which later a monastery was built. We also had a very nice view from there:

On the way we stumbled over a great exhibition of puppetery. We talked a little with the girl sitting there at the entrance and she told us a lot about the founder, Vittorio Podrecca, who was born in Cividale and founded the greatest puppet company in the world.

In the afternoon we had coffee and sweet stuff at the Zuckerfee again and in the early evening we ate at the same pizzeria from yesterday, the 4S because it was really good.

Afterwards we wandered around a little and enjoyed the warm evening.

Btw, I tried three different flavours of icecream at two different gelaterias today. Cividale is definitely the icecream highlight of the trail so far. 😎

Some figures for today:

  • 2km
  • 0m up
  • 0m down
  • Icecream: 5 scoops
