The Nockberge await

It was very difficult to decide which trail to choose this year. For one, we only had a limited amount of holidays but we still wanted to do trail hiking because we so came to love this kind of hiking! So we leafed through many hiking brochures searching for a short trail easy to reach … Continue reading “The Nockberge await”

Let’s try something new…

I got a shiny new backpack from Osprey for Christmas. A Kyte, 36 litres. No, I’m most certainly not addicted to backpacks! But it’s just that you do need different sizes because you also hike different distances, right? RIGHT?

Arrival in Villach

Since the start of our trail is in the middle of nowhere we decided to drive to Villach acting as a base camp because we still don’t know whether the traverse to Slovenia will work (depending on the weather). So Villach was a reasonable place since it’s reachable from every spot we might end up…

Day 1: Katschberg Talstation – Neue Bonner Hütte

Getting up at 4.30 a.m. is early. Like in are-you-out-of-your-mind early! But getting to the start of today’s tour is rather difficult: train to Spittal, bus to Gmünd, bus to Katschberg Talstation. And since the only bus from Gmünd leaves at 7.20 a.m. there’s no other way than to get up when it’s still dark … Continue reading “Day 1: Katschberg Talstation – Neue Bonner Hütte”

Day 2: Neue Bonner Hütte – Innerkrems

When we woke at 6.15 a.m. it was very foggy outside. We slept very well and though there were quite some people staying in the hut for the night it was utterly quiet. Well, except for the constant peeping of the low battery of the smoke detector every 30 minutes… 😂

Day 3: Innerkrems – Turracher Höhe

When we got up this morning the sky was already dominated by high fog. Same procedure as yesterday. 😒 Still, we got up and had an early breakfast at 6.45 a.m. All the bikers were still sleeping. 😜

Day 4: Turracher Höhe – Lärchenhütte

We slept very good and the bed was so comfortable that getting up was hard but we needed an early start because thunderstorm and rain were predicted…

Day 5: Lärchenhütte – Erlacher Haus

There was such an utter silence at the Lärchenhütte and we slept so well that I for the first time wasn’t awake before the alarm went off…

Day 6: The 4 Summits

Since we stayed two nights in the Erlacher Haus we decided to make a roundtrip to some Nockberge summits today. How many would depend on the weather.

Day 7: Erlacher Haus – Radenthein

Today was our last day in the Nockberge (Nocky Mountains 😅). I’m so gonna miss the solitude, the wonderful vegetation and the amazing mountain air up here. Going back down into the valley will be rather a shock, and just by thinking of having to go back to Vienna by the end of this week … Continue reading “Day 7: Erlacher Haus – Radenthein”

Day 8: Villach – Baumgartnerhof

The apartment in Villach was quite nice and calm and we slept until the alarm clock went off. Since there was no breakfast available we had bought a little snack in Radenthein…

Day 9: AAT Reloaded, Stage 22 –> Baumgartner Höhe – Kranjska Gora

Today we would be hiking another stage of the AAT, from Baumgartner Höhe to Kranjska Gora. Meaning we would be hiking along the Austrian-Slovenian border, via some mountain passes and summits without any serviced huts on the way. It’s also the most difficult stage of the AAT with an approx. duration of 8 hours… So, … Continue reading “Day 9: AAT Reloaded, Stage 22 –> Baumgartner Höhe – Kranjska Gora”

Day 10: Back to Austria, Kranjska Gora – Faak/See

So, now we were in Kranjska Gora. How to come back to Austria? Public transport would be possible but not very easy because there’s no train to Villach. A taxi would cost around 50 Euro, not too expensive but then again we could invest those Euros in food. 😜 And our CO2 footprint wouldn’t be … Continue reading “Day 10: Back to Austria, Kranjska Gora – Faak/See”
