Day 6: The 4 Summits

Since we stayed two nights in the Erlacher Haus we decided to make a roundtrip to some Nockberge summits today. How many would depend on the weather.

The night was fine, we even had the window open and heard the stream not far from the hut. Unfortunately, when we came down for breakfast the room was filled with loads of pensioners dressed in fancy brand-name microfabric hiking stuff and very loudly communicating. So, we were told breakfast was only at 7.30 a.m., and here they all were with their food in front of them!

Due to the noise we quickly stuffed ourselves with bread, rolls and jam and fled from the hut. For the first time in days the weather seemed stable and the sun made a tiny appearance.

So we decided to head to the Großer Rosennock at first. We hiked along the pasture and saw a pretty hut, with blue sky in the background. Blue sky! That this still existed!

The way up was rather steep but easy to hike and we had some nice views.

Though, the sun traded place with the fog ever so often, and when we were on top of the summit at 2.440m we had fog again instead of good visability. Well, weren’t we used to it already? 😒

There were two other local guys already on top so we got a summit photo of us:

Since it was foggy, windy and cold we quickly continued down again. The high fog mostly clouded the tops so below it was quite ok, and we decided to check the next summit, the Predigerstuhl which we already knew from our AAT.

So we headed down to the Naßbodensee, over a lot of rocks and stones and up again.

Somewhere along the way we stopped for some photos since the view was again better.

When we reached the Predigerstuhl at 2.213m the fog greeted us again like a good old friend. So we tried to make at least a few good pics and decided to press on to our third summit, the Pfannock at 2.254m.

Again we had to hike down a bit and then up again. Miraculously, the weather seemed to improve and we even saw to the Königstuhl and the Rinsennock where we’ve already been. The view was magical, this time even on the top so we stayed a while longer and enjoyed the sun.

Then we hiked down again and to the Oswalder-Bock-Sattel. There we concluded that 4 is definitely better than 3 so we decided to do the Mallnock (2.226m), too.

The path was easy but rather steep at the end and the sun was shining so we sweated quite a bit. This being the 4th ascent the legs already felt a bit tired. But we made it and had a great view to all the summits we’ve been to this day and yesterday. A finale grande!

Now there was nothing left to do than to hike back to the Erlacher Haus since we definitely were done for today. On the way back we stopped at the Oswalder Bockhütte and had something to eat and drink. It was a lovely place to sit outside and watch the beauty of the Nockberge.

The rest was a 30 minutes trip down to the Erlacher Haus.

After showering and strolling around to find a reasonable internet connection (which we didn’t 😉) we had dinner. Unfortunately later this evening there were a lot of people around drinking and laughing and screaming that this was another night at this hut without the quiet of the mountains. Oh how we missed our night at the Lärchenhütte!!!

Some figures:

  • 19km
  • 1500m up
  • 1500m down
  • Highest point: 2.440 (Rosennock)
  • Rain: none (only when we were back in the hut again!)
  • Summits: 4
  • Fog: enough for a lifetime of hiking!
