Stage 3: Weißenkirchen – Spitz – Mühldorf

Today, thunder and rain was forecasted so we wanted to start a little earlier than the last two days. The owner of the Donauhof was so lovely and prepared breakfast for us already at 7.30 a.m., therefore, and it was great! Many regional products, great cakes and other sweet stuff, home-made apricot jam again, tea from Sonnentor, organic fruit juices, a great Liptauer spread…

So we started off filled and happy at 8.15…

The first part of today’s trail lead through the vineyards. Already, it was very hot and the hiking uphill made us sweat very quickly. But it was an easy path and there was no one else around.

Soon a shaded forest path lead us on and again, no one else was wandering along. Everything was so peaceful!

In-between we sometimes hiked through the vineyards again and had nice views now and then.

Around the Michaelerberg the trail lead on a rocky path through the forest until we reached the Rotes Tor just above Spitz. Up there we had a pretty view on the scenic town Spitz.

We headed down to and through Spitz which was very quiet on this Sunday if it wasn’t for a few boat tourists.

Originally, Spitz would be the end of today’s stage. But 10km and 2 hours of hiking would have been totally not enough so we combined this and the next stage and headed on to Mühldorf.

Again, the path started uphill and we head a nice view back again.

We hiked uphill through the vineyards again, thankfully the sky was already clouded, before we reached – 4km later – the Zornberghütte where a local wine maker had a beverage service today! We found a great spot underneath a tree and sipped refreshing grape juice. Some raindrops fell but we were well shaded and enjoyed our first break today. Since the food was too heavy on meat (in fact, it was only meat) we ate our own stuff. 😉

Half an hour later, we moved on again. Through forests and vineyards and fruit orchards (mainly plums, apples and peaches) we hiked until we were very close to Mühldorf and where the trail lead us uphill to the old castle Burg Oberranna. The area was great, it resembled some kind of enchanted castle but unfortunately only the gardens and not the castle itself were accessible.

Afterwards we hiked through a fruit orchard again and started down to Mühldorf.

After finding our inn for this night and having had a shower we went to the Bäckereimuseum in Mühldorf and had the loveliest coffee break. 🥰

As for the rest of Mühldorf: it wasn’t very exciting and we found a bench near the vineyards and enjoyed a NON RAINY early evening.

Today in numbers:

  • 22km
  • 900m each up and 750m down
  • Hiking time: 4h 30min
  • Total time: 6h
