Day 7 – from Obervellach to Pension Scheiflinger

With today we’ve now been hiking one full week! Especially the first days were hard and nearly brought us to our limits. After yesterday we were very exhausted and didn’t do much else than to lie in bed from 6 o’clock p.m.

But today was the first time hiking felt easy. Of course it helped that we had an easy, comfortable route today but also my hips nearly didn’t hurt anymore, my feet only a little towards the end and there were no neverending steep descent. So all in all, today was great! 😊

Though it didn’t start so very great. My hand hurt and was swollen from this awful horse fly bite 2 two days ago so we visited the Obervellach pharmacy again since it was also nearly on our way. I just wanted to get something against the itchiness but the pharmacist told me that this year there are quite some cases of sepsis due to insect bites and also gave me antibiotics if it gets worse. Wonderful! 😒

Then we started our part for today. The path led onto the Pfaffenberg, quite comfortable and not very steep. On the way up we passed the Mölltalblick with a nice view into the Möll valley. Only the weather could have been better because it rained slightly and so it was cloudy and foggy.

Afterwards the way continued slowly upwards to the Gatternighof from where the view was even better:

Then we hiked some kilometres on the same level before the path descended down to the castle Niederfalkenstein. Unfortunately we read too late that you could call in advance for being allowed to have a look inside so we just stood in front of closed gates.

On the way further along we saw this funny stone at a river:

Very soon we wandered through some villages before the ascent began up the hill Danielsberg. The path was very nice, through a beautiful forest, and again, we were the only ones on the way.

On the top of the Danielsberg there’s the awesome restaurant Herkuleshof where we stopped for food and drink. The waiter, also having hiked the Austrian part of the AAT, was very friendly and we chatted a little while. The food was delicious and we were so hungry that we ordered dessert without a second thought.

Afterwards we walked up to the small church next to the Herkuleshof from where we had an awesome view down to the end of the Möll valley.

The way down from the Danielsberg to our accomodation for this night was again through the lovely forest.

The Pension Scheiflinger is very nice, the room with the wooden balcony and the bath ensuite lovely and definitely to be recommended.

Some figures for today:

  • 18 km
  • 864m up
  • 670m down
  • Hiking time: 3h 26m
