Day 27 – from Monte Lussari to Tarvisio

We’ve never slept better on the whole trail than on the Monte Lussari. It was so quiet at night you didn’t hear anything! Even with our window open. The air was cool and fresh and we woke even before our alarm. Since breakfast was only served at 8 a.m. and we didn’t have any hurry at all today we walked up again to the top of the Monte Lussari where we did our usual warm-up for the hike.

I even did some yoga poses though it was not very stable on the stones up there. 😉

Breakfast wasn’t the hit. I know we’re in Italy but you can’t call this cotton wool with the rubbery crust bread. Nope, not at all. Other than that there were croissants which I’m also not a fan outside of France. 😉 And we had no fresh fruits. So I mainly stick to muesli. But at least the coffee was great. 😁

I also found it weird that the two people from the staff who were there in the evening and morning didn’t speak a word English (or German) although they were both rather young. But Jure, the owner, knows at least 4 languages fluently and is a cool funny guy! So because of the unique location of this accomodation we can fully recommend it!

Btw, since in one of my first posts I wrote about us choosing our shirts of merino wool I now can fully confirm that you won’t find anything better than this for long distance hiking! We use our shirts at least 5-7 days in a row without washing and we wear them daily and sweat a lot – and still, they don’t even smell a bit!!! And although we have our heavy backpacks on our shoulders for quite some hours each day they aren’t worn out even a little. And because we are so satisfied with them here a little advertising for these organic clothes from Dilling – they really make hiking way easier 😉 (Felix was just putting on sun blocker when I saw that it looked like an ad and had to take a picture 😁):

Quite late at around 9.30 a.m. we started our short hike of 12km down to Tarvisio.

At first we had some difficulties with our GPS tracking with the AAT app because the offline maps had somehow disappeared. So you only saw the track without any paths. But we had our Garmin GPS device and got along with this. And anyway, the path was very good marked. At the beginning, the marked route varied to the GPS track and lead us through a small shaded forest path instead of the 4×4 road in the hot sun. Obviously, the AAT track was changed here, much to its advantage. 😉

Already here on the first few kilometres we met a lot of day hikers that hiked up to the Monte from Tarvisio. The majority were Austrians who greeted friendly as we are used to in the mountains in Austria. In the last few days we seldom met hikers and if we did they just passed along without a word. So this hike down to Tarvisio was kind of nice! And now we also got to know what Italians say for “Servas”: Salve, like the old Romans did. 😉 One guy even greeted with Peace. 😁 The best was actually an Italian hiker who had a garbage bag attached to his backpacks and collected all the wast lying around. My hero of the trail!

The way down was a bit slippery because of all the stones and the gravels and twice I fell. 😒 But apart from that it wasn’t too bad and there were so many raspberry bushes that we stopped rather often to make up for our morning dose of fruits.

After about 7km and not even two hours we were in Camporosso in Valcanale. There at the valley station of the cable car we stopped at a small pub and bought something to drink before we continued the last 5 kilometres to Tarvisio. At first we thought that we had to walk it on the asphalted bike lane as indicated in our guidebook and the app but obviously the Italians had changed the way a bit so after 2km of the bike lane the path led up to the forest. We were quite happy because the bike lane was already in the blazing sun. But the way in the forest was really nice and we reached Tarvisio in no time.

It was also not difficult to find our accomodation, Central Greenlife (on the way I had to get my first icecream, being in Italy etc 😉).

The owners of the inn were both very nice and the accomodation is rather cool: two rooms with a separate bathroom each and one common kitchen and dining area. There’s everything you need: stove, toaster, tea cooking facility, coffee machine… There are fruits in the fridge to take and everything you need for a small breakfast so you’re not dependent on breakfast hours. There’s also a big garden.

Of course it depends on the occupants of the other room. 😉 In our case they are unfortunately three male smoking motor bikers, quite the opposite of us. 😉 I so had wished they were other long distance hikers. 😔

After showering we went for a little walk through Tarvisio for food shopping and something to eat. When we chose a restaurant, the Kirchenwirt at the main square, and sat down the waiter was talking on his mobile phone and quite ignoring us. So, after 10 minutes we left. If they don’t need our money it’s ok for us. We had coffee at a pub nearby.

Afterwards we did some shopping (and I had my second icecream) because we decided to eat at our accomodation. It was cheaper anyway. 😉

Btw, the AAT information point in Tarvisio was quite cute and I liked the sign:

Some figures for today:

  • 12km
  • 120m up
  • 1220m down
  • Hiking time: 2h 45m
