Day 39 – from Šmartno to Cormòns

Since breakfast was only at 8 a.m. we could have slept longer but the church bells woke us again nicely and loudly at 6 a.m. Honestly, you really seldom need an alarm clock on the trail. 😉

At least breakfast was really very good!!! We even got decent wholegrain rolls, not this white stuff Italians count as bread. 😉 The jams were all homemade, and we had lots of fruits, muesli, incredibly good honey and even cookies. So, very stuffed we started off quite late today.

The sun was already very warm, there was no wind and for a good part of the whole stage (9km) we hiked nearly only on the street in the blazing sun which was reflected quite effectively from the asphalt and didn’t lift our spirits. Somewhere along we had a short path through the vineyards and some small forest but that was much too short to be a relief from the heat.

At a small village on a hill, Medana, we stopped at a nice little resting spot at a church where we found some wooden table and benches. Since we had a short day we were in no hurry and enjoyed the quiet in the shadow.

Shortly after leaving Medana we passed a supermarket and bought some cool drinks before heading on, again on the street. 😒

Finally, after 9km, we hiked through some vineyards before entering a nice recreational area, the forest Bosca di Plessiva. We stopped again at a playground where we found some nice benches and even a very clean public WC. We stayed there for at least half an hour, it was very comfortable in the cool shadow and there was not a single person around anywhere! Actually, we haven’t met any hikers in the last four days and even felt a little lonely. (Martin, this is for you: hurry up, we miss you!!! 😉)

Afterwards we had to continue again although it was so nice lingering around. 😉

The path was at first quite ok, leading uphill for a while. Only there were some really annoying little midges always buzzing about in front of my sunglasses.

When we headed downhill we again experienced some storm damages and had to crawl around this special obstacle:

Not so easy with a large backpack!

After leaving the forest we emerged at some small residential area with pretty awesome houses. Then the way led uphill again onto the Monte Quarin. I suppose the only purpose of this detour of the trail was the view on Cormòns which by any means was great indeed!

There, we also passed the church of the Madonna of Salvation:

Then the path led downhill again, quite steeply, into Cormòns.

The town seemed like a ghost town, we didn’t see any people around. Ok, it was hot outside but nonetheless…

We also found the AAT information point again:

On the way to our accomodation, the B&B Morena, we stopped an a gelateria because I needed to have icecream! The guy selling the icecream asked us from where we came from and told us (in German) that he had worked in Vienna at the same icecream salon Bortolotti for 3 years which was just next to where we had lived once. 😁 His icecream was really very good and I decided to come back later that day.

We found the B&B very easily, a nice room overlooking the garden with a small bathroom. We got complementary water bottles and could even choose the time for our breakfast.

After showering we relaxed a bit and even fell asleep for a short time. Then, it was 3.30 p.m., we got hungry not having eaten anything properly since breakfast. But try to find an open restaurant at this time in Italy!

After having walked through the whole centre of Cormòns we gave up and found a supermarket where we bought enough stuff to eat. We went back to the main square where we first had a coffee at a café and then went to one of the benches under the trees and ate most of what we’ve bought. Most of the other benches were occupied by middle aged women who seemed to wait before it got cooler to go home and make dinner. 😉

Afterwards we went back to our accomodation and couldn’t resist to take another icecream on the way from our friendly icecream guy. 😁

Some figures for today:

  • 15,7km
  • 370m up
  • 570m down
  • Hiking time: 3h 25m
