Day 4 – from Pension Pichlerhof to Fraganter Schutzhaus

Since we had no connection whatsoever yesterday evening I’m adding day 4 today. 😊

We slept very good in the Pension Pichlerhof and though the breakfast wasn’t very large we got our stomaches filled for another long and hard day of hiking.

The path from the accomodation to Stall wasn’t very exciting but quite ok and well marked. We stopped at the local and only supermarket for some ginger (according to our landlady this should help against cold sores – as if normal blisters weren’t enough 😒) and took a picture at the AAT information point before the ascent began again.

At first it was a broad 4×4 road but too soon the path made shortcuts through the woods. Steep ones. 😉 After 3km we made an ascent of 600m. But the path was nice, in the shade of the cool forest.

At the edge of the forest shortly before the alpine pasture began we stopped for a little break. It was very beautiful up here, with the fog still hanging between the trees and no other sound than those of the birds.

Afterwards a nice forest path led upwards again and we had a gorgeous view down into the valley and at the mountains all around.

It was a beautiful path up to now. But then a not so beautiful re-routing began because of storms which caused quite a devastation and many fallen trees in this area. This meant hiking 200m of descent and then again of ascent on 1km on a very boring 4×4 route.

But then we came along the Goldberghütte and stopped for cake, coffee and a long chat with the owner of the hut and some locals. We stayed for 1 hour! 😱

After leaving the hut we soon came to the Rollbahnweg, the most beautiful, flat hiking path I’ve ever wandered along. It’s a path from the old times of copper mining.

The surface was soft with fir/pine needles and we had some nice views from up there.

After leaving this path and crossing the Sadnigbach we finally made it to the Fraganter Schutzhaus.

Our room for the night was of course very basic and tiny with two beds. There is only one shower and one WC for each men and women in total. Sleeping liners and own towels were necessary and for having warm water while taking a shower you need special shower coins. And the best thing: no connection whatsoever with your mobile phone unless you walk 10 minutes up the hill behind the hut. 😉

The choice food was awesome even for vegetarians and we had a very nice evening while eating and chatting with the innkeeper couple and a local farmer who came along for a beer.

Some figures for today:

  • 21,4km
  • 1570m up
  • 780m down
  • Hiking time: 4h 42m
