Day 30 – from Kranjska Gora to Trenta

Tonight we slept insanely well! After the awful night in the Rifugio Zacchi we probably were tired beyond words and it was so quiet at the hotel Miklic and the beds were so comfortable!

The breakfast was also just perfect, a great choice with everything and more (also a lot of sweet stuff from what we couldn’t try everything and regretted it 😉). We even got two fried eggs each. I also rescued a bird that flew against the window of the restaurant and – being dazed – into the restaurant itself. It fell onto the window sill. I quickly grabbed it and brought the tiny thing outside. Poor guy was so very shocked, and its heart pounded like mad. But it was ok and started right off my hands into the sky again. The day was saved. 😉

We were so stuffed when we started today’s tour. At first we had a very short but not unpleasant part on asphalt to the lake Jasna, a beautiful recreational area near Kranjska Gora.

There were already quite some people running and walking. The Slovenians appear to be rather sportive. 😉

Soon we entered the Triglav national park and hiked along the river Pišnica a most beautiful path quite like on alpine pastures. It was cool thanks to rainfalls last night and hiking here was such a pleasure!!!

After some kilometres more or less even the path went upwards and we reached the Russian chapel. It’s a monument built for the Russian prisoners of war in World War I. We took some photos, and when suddenly a bus full of tourists stopped we quickly left the site. 😉

The path went upwards further on through the forest with a lot of blissful silence and wonderful air.

On the way of we saw a field of these famous stone figures:

2km before reaching the pass Vrsič we had something to drink and an awesome Apfelstrudel at a mountain hut.

The rest of the way up to the pass was easy and quick hiking and the view from up above at 1680m was really great although it was still cloudy and foggy from the rainfalls last night!

But since you could drive nearly all the way up by car there were masses of people!!! And there were even some sheep running around on the street, between the tourists and one even queued up at a snack bar. Perhaps it was hungry. 😉

Then we headed down in the direction of the Soča. And now for the first time we got a glimpse on the infamous Slovenian (non-)markings of the trail.

We had some hard time finding the correct path and headed through the forest on some quite adventurous ways. When we finally were on the right track we headed down for half an eternity (800m down on 5km) on a not so easy hikeable path.

Were we happy when we finally got out of the forest at the Soča! Then we had the idea of going to the source of the Soča, a hike of only 15 minutes as a sign stated. We just didn’t know that it included climbing on a rock with the help of cables and steel pegs. And this with the backpacks!!! This was by far the most dangerous part on the whole trail! I was wondering why so many parents let their children climb around here, unsecured and with that many rocks and boulders. And there was no single sign that indicated the difficulty of the path.

The source was ok but not what I expected. It’s a narrow, rocky cave where you can see emerald green water. The way to the source was in fact much more exciting than the source itself.

Back down again we hiked to Trenta on a forest path following the Soča downhill. It was so long that we thought we would never reach Trenta.

Actually, according to the guidebook the route today would have been 18,7km. In fact, we hiked for nearly 24km! I don’t know where the data went wrong so much here!

On arriving in Trenta we were rather at our limits. We found our accomodation, the Air B&B Zorc. It’s nothing special but very cheap! We pay 41 Euros for both of us.

Trenta itself is a huge disappointment. 😉 There’s only one shop where you can buy food and it’s not really well stocked. It’s more adapted to the main clientele, campers. And the only restaurant here is expensive with mainly Italian dishes though not very good.

Our hopes now lie on Bovec tomorrow!

Some figures for today:

  • 23,3km
  • 1125km up
  • 1300m down
  • Hiking time: 6h 2m
