Day 32 – from Bovec to Drežnica

The night at the Apartment Raft was very quiet and comfortable, even the churchbells started to ring only by 7 a.m. 😉

We got up at 6.15 a.m. and made breakfast. Rather spare with yogurts, rolls with butter and peaches. But well, at least we started with a full stomach.

At first it was a short part on asphalt road before we hiked on 4×4 roads and forest paths to the waterfall Slap Virje. It was a nice pretty waterfall but after the regions around the Großglockner and the Mölltal it kind of didn’t impress us anymore. Story of a long distance hiker – you see a lot in short time and can draw conclusions from still vivid memories. 😉

After the waterfall we continued a little next to a golf course before we reached another waterfall, the largest of Slovenia. We just watched it from some distance because we didn’t want to make another detour of more than 30 minutes considering that the stage was long enough. We crossed a street and headed further on a 4×4 road.

That’s another thing I don’t like so much at hiking along the Soča: most of the time the street is on the other side of the river so you hear and sometimes see cars too often. It’s not like hiking in the mountains and it’s way too noisy for me sometimes.

Afterwards we hiked for 8 more kilometres on sometimes rocky and not very comfortable paths again before we reached a camping site with a café on the other side of the Soča at around noon. We so wanted to drink something else than water that we crossed the swing bridge and stopped at this small café which is mainly for campers.

Then we made a great mistake. We didn’t follow the trail markings back to the other side of the Soča but followed our guidebook which told something about a “pleasant path along the right bank of the Soča” – only that it wasn’t pleasant at all. It was downright dangerous! They must have changed the course since (our guidebook is from 2015/2016) because there were quite some erosions and some parts of the path were not really hikeable. We climbed over large boulders on all fours (do this with a large backpack!) and tried to cross over not anymore existing paths. And all this for the distance of 2km and never knowing if the path continued at all.

Finally, to our greatest relief, we saw the swing bridge to cross to the other side again. At least I had some nice photos of the Soča from here:

Afterwards we hiked for about another 5 km until we finally reached Drežnica. Already half an hour before arriving you could see the pretty church:

The landscape was also a little more like alpine pastures again with some mountains in the background:

We found our accomodation, the Rooms Pri Lovrižu rather easily, a nice B&B with ensuite rooms large enough for one night.

After showering we wanted to do some shopping at the only shop here but it only opened at 6.30 p.m. So we had lunch/dinner at the Jelkin Hram, quite likely the only place to eat here, and had really great homemade gnocchis and the traditional Slovenian dessert Drežniski struklji, rather similiar to Kletzennudeln.

After shopping we just relaxed at our accomodation.

And that’s how the church looks at night (ringing madly at 8.40 p.m. for reasons totally unknown to us):

Some figures for today:

  • 25,2km
  • 555m up
  • 500m down
  • Hiking time: 5h 29m
